How to personalize a career progression path? Question for Senior Monkeys

Hey everyone,

I'll be starting in a top bb m&a group soon and was wondering about the possibility to buyside after getting a VP Promotion. I am not interested in private equity, but more so roles in private credit or l/s hedgefunds.

1.) If I were to get the vp promotion and tried to move to pc or hf, would I be able to? I'd be ok with a pay cut, but probably no less than around 400k all in. Don't care about SM vs MM

2.) If I go the buyside route and I am bad at ut/hate it, would I be able to leverage the prior BB VP position to go back to any reputable bank as a VP.

I want to build a base in IB as VP just so I have something to fall back on in case buyside transition doesn't work out and avoid something like coming in as a 35 year old associate.

Top BB lol congrats on UBS how about you hit the desk first kid before you worry about making it to buy side. The killers always rise to the top and play with the big boys and from your post I can tell you’re not a killer. Try and finish out your 2 years and go to corp dev scratch that you strike me as more of a wealth management or bus ops person
