How to Prep for Summer Associate Internship

I'm currently at a MBA program in the south, and I got an IB offer for an established bank in NYC for the summer. I'm looking for advice on how to prep and be able to start strong during the summer as I'd really like a return (obviously) and don't want to be that MBA associate. I'd love some insight on resources, things to focus on etc. I've been in finance for sometime but valuation is something I know I need practice in.

Additionally - what are typical expectations of summer associates? Will I just be aligning logo's and turning comments all summer?

To prep for your Summer Associate internship and ensure you start strong, here’s what you need to focus on:

  1. Technical Skills:

    • Brush up on valuation techniques like DCF, comps, and precedent transactions. Knowing how to build a model from scratch is crucial. If you haven’t already, consider taking courses like Wall Street Prep or similar programs to solidify your modeling skills.
    • Familiarize yourself with tools like CapIQ or other databases your bank might use for comps and transaction searches. If you can access these tools at school, practice running searches and analyzing data.
  2. Excel and PowerPoint Proficiency:

    • Solid Excel and PowerPoint skills are non-negotiable. Advanced knowledge of shortcuts, formatting, and creating clean, professional outputs will save you time and impress your team. Wall Street Prep’s advanced PowerPoint course is highly recommended for mastering these skills.
  3. Industry Knowledge:

    • Stay updated on business news daily (WSJ, Barron’s, FT). If you’re in a coverage group, dive deep into the industry you’ll be working in. LinkedIn groups and industry-specific publications can also be helpful.
  4. Expectations and Mindset:

    • As a summer associate, you’re expected to act as a bridge between analysts and senior bankers. While you might not be aligning logos all summer, you’ll likely review analysts’ work, provide feedback, and ensure deliverables meet expectations. Be prepared to turn comments and refine outputs.
    • Don’t act like you’re above summer analysts. You’re there to learn and contribute, so approach the role with humility and a team-oriented mindset.
  5. Networking and Mentorship:

    • Build relationships early. If possible, connect with someone at the bank (a buddy or mentor) who can give you insights into the team’s culture, tools, and expectations. This can help you hit the ground running.
  6. Behavioral Preparation:

    • Practice your soft skills. Be ready to handle feedback constructively, communicate effectively, and manage your time under pressure. These are as important as technical skills.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll position yourself as a strong candidate for a return offer. For additional resources, check out Wall Street Oasis’ Investment Banking Interview Prep and Financial Modeling Resources for templates and guides. Good luck!
