How to Spin a No Return Offer

Hey everyone,

Looking for advice on how to best handle this situation during full-time recruiting conversations. Last summer, I interned at a middle market IB firm as a summer analyst, but unfortunately didn’t receive a return offer.

I’m currently in my 5th year pursuing a Master’s degree, doing graduate-level M&A research to stay sharp and fill in any gaps. I’ve also been networking heavily and brushing up on modeling.

The feedback I received was that the group had limited deal flow, and given how tough the market’s been (especially in my coverage vertical), it came down more to return needs than performance. One of the VPs I worked closely with even wrote my recommendation letter for the MS program.

That said – when I’m in interviews now, what’s the best way to explain not getting the return without sounding like I’m making excuses? How can I spin it constructively without raising red flags?

Appreciate any tips from people who’ve been in similar situations or have insight into how interviewers actually interpret this.
