How to switch from Portfolio Management to Relationship Management - Corporate Banking (IB)
Hi,
I just recently started a role as a corporate banking analyst covering an industry, and my "deal team" is the "portfolio management" team which means we basically are stuck doing all of the annual credit reviews and we barely touch any of the new underwriting stuff. I'm worried about falling behind my peers who started on the relationship management side as it appears they are getting way more exposure and experience than me and will actually have things to talk about for transaction experience on their resume/future interviews.
It looks like once you're in PM you get pigeonholed and there's no way to get to the RM side which I heard pays much more and has better exit opps.
I want to switch to Leveraged Finance after this, but I'm afraid I won't be able to because all I'm doing is annual reviews. What's the best way to move over to the relationship management side? Do I need to do the RM side before trying to make a jump to LevFin?

The best path forward is somewhat dependent on the bank you’re at. I work in CB and know people that have done this at pretty much every Top 20 bank.
Why is it dependent on what bank I’m at? What’s the path to do this?
