How to tell staffer “no”

I’m on a live deal with an associate that is hated by every single 1st yr and 2nd yr analysts. I dread going in to work with him because of how difficult it is to deal with him. He’s competent at his job, but terrible interpersonally and as a manager.

I ideally want to avoid doing deals with him in the future. If a staffer tries to place me on another deal with him, how do I gently say “no” without making it into an office politics spectacle?

Put like 15 mins on your staffer’s calendar. Go into their office, and just tell them that you’re starting to get burnt out by the team, not necessarily by the work. Assure them you’ll still do good work on this project, but you’d like to get exposure to other parts of the team next time around.

It’s been my experience that staffers usually get it and are not openly trying to make your experience miserable
