I don't understand the timelines

Hi all, sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just want to clarify, as I can't seem to wrap my head around the timelines for applications.

For reference, I'm a sophomore student at a semi-target state school graduating in 2028. I am deadset on IB and have been prepping/networking since early May. My issue is that I would recruit for summer 27' internships, right? I see online at some BBs that applications are open for the summer of '26, but I am just confused, as amn't I supposed to recruit for the '27 ones? Should I apply for both? Could it hurt? What are your thoughts?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how the timelines work and what you should focus on:

  1. Sophomore Summer Internships (Summer 2026):

    • These are typically targeted at sophomores and are often part of diversity programs or specific sophomore-focused initiatives.
    • If you're seeing applications open for Summer 2026, they are likely for these sophomore-specific roles.
    • While these internships are not as common as junior-year internships, they can be a great stepping stone to secure a junior summer internship at a BB or MM bank.
  2. Junior Summer Internships (Summer 2027):

    • This is the critical internship that leads to full-time offers. Recruiting for these roles often starts as early as sophomore spring or summer.
    • Since you're graduating in 2028, this is the internship you should prioritize and prepare for. Networking, casing reps, and technical prep should be in full swing by the time applications open.
  3. Should You Apply for Both?

    • Yes, you should apply for both if you meet the eligibility criteria for the Summer 2026 roles. Securing a sophomore internship can significantly boost your chances for the Summer 2027 internship.
    • Applying for both won't hurt your chances, as banks understand the progression from sophomore to junior internships. However, ensure you tailor your applications and highlight your readiness for each role.
  4. Key Advice:

    • Start networking aggressively now for both timelines. Focus on regional/industry-specific boutiques for sophomore positions while keeping an eye on BB/MM firms for junior roles.
    • Use the sophomore internship as a stepping stone to build experience and relationships that will help you land the junior internship.
    • Follow the recruiting guides and timelines closely, as recruiting is accelerating, and some banks may open applications earlier than expected.

In summary, apply for both Summer 2026 and Summer 2027 internships. A sophomore internship can only strengthen your profile for the critical junior summer recruiting process. Keep networking and prepping!
