I want to put myself in the best position for IB..

Hello all,

Currently a Freshman student at a state school (non-target) with a 3.7 gpa, looking to transfer to a target or semi-target.

(3.4 HS GPA & 1280 SAT)

I have seen a lot of information about transfers, but honestly, none seem too sure and realistic - or maybe I am viewing transfer admissions as too difficult?

But where would you recommend transferring?

Obviously NYU would be optimal, but how realistic is such a school? How about Cornell? Duke?

What do you think of Emory, Northwestern or Boston College? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A lot depends on what state you are in. Virginia, California, or New York generally are good more pleasant for external transfer. State to Ivy is also doable but you needed to apply as a freshman for Sophomore transfer. Most ivies will burn you for being a junior transfer (AEM, NYU, Columbia). At this point, USC, UT Austin, UMich, and some LACs are your best options. DM me if you have other questions.

Would your suggestion change at all if I were to transfer at the end of my freshman year, instead of being burned as a junior transfer, as you said?

And thanks so much for the feedback.

Transfer student here. I'd say you have a decent shot at those schools. Stern is tough but could always shoot for the general school.

I left a state school and looked hard at nyu but decided against it for fit purposes. After freshman year I left an average state school to go to a well regarded liberal arts school in northeast with great network on the street, but still a non target. My advice would be to search for schools with a good network and a solid amount of alumni in the field you're targeting and don't focus too much on target vs. non target. Your school's alumni network is everything
