IB> Buis Dev> ?

Hey Guys, I don't usually post here but I am an avid reader. So i guess as you can see from my title, I went from IBD to Bus Development (My functions are pretty much of an in-house investment banker, origination, M&A and capital markets) and not sure what my end goal is? Should i go back to banking or target PE since I have been in IBD before? I also feel that my skills are under utilized here when there is no live deal. If anybody is wondering I have always been in Oil and Gas.

O&G BD-esque / deal origination and commercial structuring type here - in LNG.

For me, if I wanted to "move up" from where I am I would set my target to a similar role within PE, as you kind of suggested in your OP. Specifically, an energy infrastructure type shop with some proven experience in LNG a la a Stonepeak as an example.

I'm not a banker or have a banking background so it probably wouldn't be on the same side of the business as the vanilla PE analyst but probably more on the deal origination front and BD strategy / growth, business planning and execution, etc.

Birdy786:
what is your background? I assume you're houston based?

Houston based - non target economics and math background, went into a commodities rotational program for ~24 months (commodity ops > risk > corp dev) and was ultimately picked up by the origination and deal structuring desk a few weeks before the end of my program, been there since. Cover South American LNG to power and industrial deals, focus on Brazil.

think you need to decide if you plan on doing M&A as a career or not. if not, then start leveraging your internal network and see what kind of opps there are internally - sales/commercial, partnerships, product, fp&a, etc.
