IB -> Tech

Recently completed my SA stint at a sector-focused boutique and received a return offer. However, hated the culture and the hours made me realize I value my time more than money.

Thinking of making the move to tech in preferably a PM-type role for the better culture, more interesting work and decent pay, but don't have the faintest idea where to start with regards to recruiting and skill-building to be able to land one of these gigs coming from a finance background.

Would love to hear any advice or stories of those who have done similar things.

Recruiting for PM right out of school is tough, only way is to get into the rotational/associate pm positions for new grads (which are ridiculously competitive). If you have an interest in analytics there are plenty of analytics jobs that hire right out of new grad that you can use to pivot to pm after a couple years, happy to answer any questions about that if interested.

Also keep in mind that you ultimately want to choose a career that you'l succeed in, not just get your first role in. Do you have a technical background?

As a SWE -> consultant -> PM, it'll be be hard to succeed as a PM without learning some technical skills. You absolutely don't need a CS degree to succeed (I don't use 95% of what I learned in undergrad as a CS major), but you do need to be technical enough for engineers to work successfully with you (e.g., if you're interested in learning, I would start with understanding system design / technical architecture basics and understanding REST APIs)

Regardless, I'd echo the above poster - it's a pretty easy to pivot from data analytics to PM, and most large companies do tend to hire data analysts straight from undergrad. Comp is also pretty solid given the WLB: would expect ~120-140k comp out of undergrad at a big tech company
