IB to Project Finance at Renewable Energy Developer

Long story short, worked at a rating agency for about 2 years, then took a TMT banking role at a MM (been here about 6 months). Recently, an area I have been super interested in is project finance, specifically at a developer. I really like the part of the job that contributes something positive to society and you can see the actual outcome of your work.

Has anyone made a similar transition or works in the field? Would love to know if this is actually doable.

My careers actually went Back Office (Finance division) at Tier 1 US Bank- > Project Finance at an Infrastructure Developer - > Renewable Energy PE

So if I was able to transition from Back Office to PF @ developer I'm sure you'll have a good shot coming from IB... The trick is to get really really good at financial modelling (DCF, Project financing, debt structuring & sizing etc), the interview process will almost certainly have modelling tests and if you excel here and prove you can actually do the job your background becomes less relevant.

Maybe worthwhile to transfer to your current bank’s Power/Renewable/Utilities/Infrastructure sector team, if no,t the Project Finance product team. This should give you the necessary experience to move to the developer space without having to start over again or take a significant discount on your experience (and pay package).

Project developers don’t pay well so the significant discount will happen regardless.
