I truly just want a return offer and have my boss comment "pls fix"

I'm a senior in high school, planning to go into IB, and I'm stuck on choosing what school to attend.

I've been admitted to several but not many targets or even semi-targets (didn't take high school as seriously as my Asian friends). I'm currently stuck between Mizzou and Georgia State University (w/ Honors College). I can't decide if I should go to Mizzou and do the high GPA, join all relevant clubs, and lean on the alumni method, or go to GSU, do the same for about a year, and network my ass off at colleges like Emory and UGA with the intention of transferring to either next year.

If I do the GSU route, I would miss out on a year of being at UGA or Emory and making connections with other money-hungry prospective bankers, and I'm wondering if that might impact internship success freshman year. Also, I've seen many people say things along the lines of 'if you don't have an internship by sophomore year, you're running out of time.' At Mizzou, I would be in Columbia, Missouri, and I would imagine internship success would be slim.

I would imagine better placement at Mizzou because of 'Tigers on Wall Street', and their clubs might be larger and more impressive to lead as opposed to GSU. The main reason I'm stuck between the two is that Mizzou is more notable (than GSU), and I'm a Missouri resident, and GSU is in Atlanta and close to semi-targets I could use for networking. Let me know if I'm thinking about all of this wrong (or if you have any advice) and should just play for the Giants.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you should approach your decision:

  1. Mizzou Pros and Cons:

    • Pros: Mizzou has the "Tigers on Wall Street" program, which could provide a structured pathway to finance opportunities. Additionally, being a Missouri resident might make it more affordable, and you could focus on building a high GPA and taking leadership roles in relevant clubs.
    • Cons: Columbia, Missouri, is not a financial hub, so networking opportunities and internships might be limited compared to Atlanta.
  2. GSU Pros and Cons:

    • Pros: GSU's location in Atlanta places you near semi-targets like Emory and UGA, which could be leveraged for networking. Atlanta also offers more internship opportunities in finance, even at the boutique level.
    • Cons: GSU itself is not a target or semi-target, and transferring to Emory or UGA would mean losing a year of building connections and leadership roles at your final destination.
  3. Key Considerations:

    • Networking: If you choose GSU, you must aggressively network with students and alumni at Emory and UGA. This could open doors to internships and transfer opportunities, but it requires significant effort and strategy.
    • Internships: The idea that "if you don't have an internship by sophomore year, you're running out of time" is partially true. While it's not a hard rule, securing relevant experience early is crucial for competitive IB recruiting.
    • Transfer Strategy: If you go the GSU route, ensure you maintain a stellar GPA and build a strong extracurricular profile to make yourself a competitive transfer candidate for Emory or UGA.
  4. Recommendation:

    • If you are confident in your ability to network and transfer, GSU might offer better long-term opportunities due to its location in Atlanta. However, this path is riskier and requires a clear plan to transfer and secure internships.
    • If you prefer a more structured and stable environment, Mizzou's "Tigers on Wall Street" program and leadership opportunities in clubs could provide a solid foundation for breaking into IB, albeit with more effort required to network externally.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your confidence in executing a transfer strategy and your willingness to hustle for opportunities. If you choose GSU, make networking your top priority from day one. If you choose Mizzou, focus on excelling academically, leading in clubs, and leveraging alumni connections.
