In a dark place -FT recruiting
Hey guys,
the IB that I summer interned at is not taking on full time so I started the FT recruitment process a few months back for IB. Problem is that this FT cycle was absolutely brutal. I got an interview at a top boutique and superday at MM. but doesn't look like its going to work out.
Currently sitting at no offers and FT recruitment is practically done. Now that CS bros are also looking to get out it seems there aren't any seats left; feeling real anxiety and not sure what to do.
For background I'm graduating this fall with a 3.8 GPA from non target type school, IB experience, and PE gig. Not too worried about paying the bills right now but very worried about my career.
Could really use some advice; I'm feeling pretty lost. WSObros gave me some good guidance in the past; I think I just need some clarity and motivation. I want to make it to IB and in finance. I'm too hungry to give up now. I strongly believe in myself and my willingness to succeed.
Ive been networking and lots of no's and running out of people to talk too. any help would work
Just for you to feel better I know personally from my target that there’s people with top BB internships this summer without return offers still looking and getting rejected at regional boutiques. I also have heard there’s maybe 1 spot at whatever openings are still available (very slim) heading into Mid October. It’s a tough world out there
Ah man rip me then
Damn really? Top BB no return offer and still nothing? Makes me feel a lot more grateful after getting an offer even if it's less "prestigious" than the mid-lower BB that didn't give me a return
Have a buddy from 1 of JPM/GS IBD and no offer yet, he might move into FP&A/Corp Dev roles. And another from a top group at Citi/BAML who struck out of consulting recruiting so far and not sure what he's planning to do. Also in the FT thread you can see people with MF PE SAs with no luck yet either. This year is brutal, probably breaking in down the line is the best bet in October.
How would telling him that people with better resumes are getting rejected possibly make him feel better
It means he shouldn’t feel bad about his situation as it’s tough in this environment
Keep going. That's the only advice you need.
You may not believe it but it doesn't matter at all that you didn't get an IB offer straight out of school. You have a 3.8 gpa with IB experience ffs. Just don't EVER give up. Exhaust every resource that you have. You'll be alright.
How do I exhaust it if they tell me they’re done recruiting?
Keep grinding and apply to Vandy MSF. It will give you a safety net and a place to go if all things fail. With another recruiting cycle you’ll 100% be fine with your background. Worst case you get something and don’t get, max you lose is $1000 from your deposit. Just something to consider.
Second this. Cant hurt to have a back up plan
What about full time at a no name shop?
Obviously that’s the best backup option if you have the opportunity. I would say No name > MSF > Big 4. As you can make money still and then lateral after a year
Hide out in b school until the recession is over
Keep grinding my man. Shits hard but U got this!
Try for boutiques get a year then lateral. Try to aim for boutiques with high level seniors You may also find that you like the increased responsibility of the boutiques
Should i accpet my regional boutique
"Anonymous person on the internet help me make a major life decision with no background on my situation. "
FT recruiting can be a bitch (i've been through it) but you just have to keep pushing. Never give up, keep at it and you'll eventually get it.
