Intern Switching Groups for Full Time
I interned at a Canadian bank in their FIG group. Received and signed a fulltime offer. Just saw their P&U team is hiring for fulltime. I really do not want to be in FIG and their energy group is a lot stronger. How does it look to try to interview and sign with that group?
Switching groups after signing a full-time offer can be a delicate process, but it's not uncommon. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach this situation:
Understand the Risks: Trying to switch groups after signing an offer might raise concerns about your commitment. However, if handled professionally, it can work in your favor, especially if the energy group (P&U) is stronger and aligns better with your career goals.
Leverage Internal Networking: Start by reaching out to contacts within the P&U team. If you don’t have direct connections, use LinkedIn or internal directories to identify team members. Express your interest in their group and ask for informational chats to understand their work better.
Communicate Your Intentions: Once you’ve built rapport with the P&U team, communicate your desire to transition. Be clear about why you’re interested in P&U (e.g., stronger group, better alignment with your skills/interests) and how you can add value to their team.
Involve HR Strategically: Before making any formal moves, gauge the P&U team’s interest. If they’re open to considering you, involve HR to facilitate the transition. Highlight that this switch is about maximizing your contribution to the firm.
Be Prepared for Pushback: FIG might resist losing you, especially if they’ve invested in your training. Be respectful and emphasize that this is about your long-term fit and growth within the bank.
Timing Matters: The earlier you initiate this process, the better. Waiting too long might complicate things, especially if onboarding or training has already started.
By approaching this thoughtfully and professionally, you can increase your chances of successfully transitioning to the P&U team without burning bridges.

it's not unheard of, but how you go about it matters more than the switch itself. don't interview behind your current group's back. talk to your recruiting contact or HR first and ask how internal moves work for people with signed offers, since some banks only allow it through a formal posting and some want your current MD to sign off.
you need to show why P&U and why you'd be good at it. have an actual answer on why energy over FIG, and be ready for energy specific questions on top of the normal technicals. how a bank handles it varies, so ask HR how it works before you assume it's low risk.
