Interning as a junior for two years and applying for different internships

So here is some context: I am in a combined bachelors and masters program for finance and accounting. I will graduate with the undergraduate in 2026 and masters in 2027. I will be going to JPM MMBSI for my (Junior undegraduate/ sophmore college year) summer. I am not sure that the JPM recruiter realizes that I am in school for another year after the internship but I did say it in the interview.

I would like to work in IB post-grad and have been applying to roles. JPM has/will post Summer 2026 IB very soon. Is it a bad look/ what are the possible consequences if I apply for their IB internship for Summer 2026 without having even started an internship with them.

I appreciate all advice

Based on the most helpful WSO content, applying for a Summer 2026 IB internship at JPM before starting your MMBSI internship is not inherently a bad look, but it does require careful navigation. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Transparency: Since you mentioned your extended graduation timeline during the interview, it’s likely on record. However, ensure your application for the IB internship clearly reflects your academic timeline and career aspirations. This avoids any confusion about your intentions.

  2. Internal Mobility: JPM values internal candidates, and transitioning from MMBSI to IB is not uncommon. However, your performance during the MMBSI internship will likely play a significant role in how your IB application is perceived. Applying before starting the internship might raise questions about your commitment to MMBSI, so be prepared to explain your long-term goals.

  3. Networking: Leverage your time at MMBSI to build relationships with professionals in the IB division. Expressing interest in IB during your internship and seeking advice from colleagues can strengthen your candidacy for the Summer 2026 IB role.

  4. Recruiter Perception: Applying early might signal ambition, but it could also be seen as premature if not handled tactfully. Consider reaching out to the recruiter or HR to clarify your intentions and ensure they understand your academic and career plans.

  5. Backup Plan: If applying early doesn’t work out, you can still reapply after completing your MMBSI internship. Use the experience to enhance your resume and demonstrate your readiness for IB.

In summary, applying for the IB internship is not a bad move, but timing and communication are crucial. Make sure your application reflects your goals and aligns with JPM’s expectations.

I did something similar to this but with a different company. My recruiter reached out and told me I could only be considered for one position. I could either renege on my upcoming internship and interview for the new role, or just stick with the internship I’ve already accepted.

Honestly there’s so many different banks opening applications soon, I’d recommend you apply to SA 2026 at other banks. It’s also extremely hard to get a return IB offer from your 2025 JPM MMBSI internship, so don’t count on that.
