i think that quite a bit of it is luck. i got staffed on a $2b+ deal a few weeks into the internship and i'm pretty sure it was due to the fact that i had just finished a pitch (a few days before) and i was available.

I was lucky - got staffed on 3 live deals during my SA stint. One was a pitch that my team turned into a mandate, was one hell of an experience. The other two were ones that the staffer handed to me.

Word of advice: no interns are superstars. None. Zero. Zilch. At first I thought they were just picking on me because I was gay, but I have learned that they treat everyone equally at GS HK, so because of this I am very happy. Just remember we are all in the same boat...

depends if your group has a staffer or not. if so, then it's pretty much random.

if not, then i would say try to attach yourself/get to know the "star" analysts/associates in your group. they're usually the ones handling multiple deals at the same time. once you know them well, they will tend to get your help on their projects which have a good chance of being "live"
