Is it too late for summer internships at mid-lower MM IB firms?

Hello all,

I am still on the hunt for 2019 IB summer internships as a undergraduate junior standing student. I come from a non-target school. Is it too late to apply for internships at mid-lower middle market focused investment banks? And would you guys recommend straight up cold calling and asking if they are looking for interns?

If it is not too late, what's the best way to get in? Cold calling/emailing MDs who work there? Or simply emailing your resume/CV to their HR team and/or their general [email protected] address?

It’s not too late. Look into regional/boutique firms that don’t typically take on interns/don’t have structured internship programs. If you have a solid resume and can show genuine interest in their firm, you definitely have a chance. In terms of how to reach out to them I found cold emails to be fairly effective. Be persistent because many bankers won’t respond after the first email because they either over looked it or are busy and if they see that you continue to follow up reasonably they might be inclined to respond because they see you are actually interested and not just sending bs emails. M&I has good email templates but spend some time putting together something yourself. Good luck.

That unfortunately means “I’m not interested.” I would probably follow up in 3 weeks and ask to get on the phone with them. Until you get on the phone your not going to get an internship (that’s step 1). My strategy was to email the first banker I thought was the best target at a firm and then follow up every 1.5 weeks. I would then stagger that by email another banker in the same firm several days later (and follow up every 1.5 weeks) to maximize my chances at that firm. Check out a website called axial they have a good list of banks for every major city. Keep it up and eventually something will work out. It’s a game of large numbers. Just keep at it and eventually you’ll stumble on someone who will help you out. Worked for me. Good luck.
