Is the AFM at Bocconi worth the price ?

Hey everyone,

I just got in the AFM master (accounting and financial management) and I’m trying to figure out whether it’s the right move for my goals and if it’s worth the price.

I’m French, studied in the US, and have spent the last year working in finance operations at a large retail company in the US.

My ultimate goal is to start and grow my own business. That could be a DTC brand, a franchise, a restaurant concept, or something along those lines. I also want a solid Plan B (and a good learning experience) if entrepreneurship doesn’t work out right away.

The AFM program would cost me around €36k in tuition alone, plus living expenses in Milan, so I’m trying to see if the price is actually worth it.

If I don’t launch something immediately after graduation, I’d like to work somewhere that would help me understand from the inside how businesses are built, and operated.
Private equity is one path that interests me, but I’m still figuring things out.

I’d also prefer ending up in London or Paris rather than staying in Italy.

For those familiar with Bocconi, do you think AFM is worth the investment? How strong is it for opportunities in London/Paris, and is it a good path for someone who eventually wants to become an entrepreneur? Would you pick AFM, or a different Bocconi master’s, in my situation?

Thank you so much.

Worth it?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the AFM (Accounting and Financial Management) program at Bocconi is a solid choice, but whether it’s worth the investment depends on your specific goals and priorities.

Key Considerations:

  1. Opportunities in London/Paris:

    • Bocconi has a strong reputation and network, particularly for finance-related roles, and its alumni are well-represented in London. However, the AFM program may not be as strong as the MSc Finance for breaking into competitive fields like private equity or investment banking in London or Paris.
    • If your goal is to work in London or Paris, Bocconi’s MSc Finance might offer better placement opportunities and a stronger network in those cities.
  2. Entrepreneurship Goals:

    • The AFM program could provide you with a solid foundation in accounting and financial management, which are critical skills for running your own business. However, it’s not specifically tailored to entrepreneurship.
    • If entrepreneurship is your ultimate goal, you might also consider programs with a stronger focus on innovation, strategy, or entrepreneurship, either at Bocconi or elsewhere.
  3. Cost vs. Value:

    • At €36k plus living expenses, the AFM program is a significant investment. If you’re not planning to stay in Italy and are targeting London or Paris, you’ll need to weigh the program’s ROI carefully.
    • Bocconi’s MSc Finance, while more expensive, might offer better long-term value if you’re considering private equity or other high-paying finance roles as a Plan B.
  4. Alternative Programs:

    • If you’re open to waiting a year, preparing for the GMAT, and applying to other schools, you could consider top programs like HEC Paris, LBS, or ESSEC, which might align better with your goals of working in London/Paris and eventually becoming an entrepreneur.

Recommendation:

  • If you’re set on Bocconi and want a program that balances finance and entrepreneurship, the MSc Finance might be a better fit than AFM for your goals.
  • If you’re flexible, exploring other programs with stronger entrepreneurship or international networks could be worth considering.

Ultimately, the decision depends on how much weight you place on Bocconi’s network, the AFM curriculum, and your willingness to invest in a program that may not be the absolute best fit for your goals.
