Is this HR email shady?

Kind of a strange situation; I got an email several days ago inviting me to interview with a middle market p/e shop for a summer analyst position. I'd already accepted a position at this point so I emailed them back saying I unfortunately accepted an offer. They replied back and wished me the best of luck.

Today I get an email saying, "Sorry but can we find out what firm you will be working this summer?" I think it's random since I didn't even schedule a first round with them. Is this shady and should I simply ignore the email? Also, I'm doing trading, so I don't think they would care at all.

normally, i wouldn't think it was a big deal to let people know where you are going, but i would probably just ignore that e-mail simply because it was intoned in such a casual manner. you just never know with people like that...

Well you have nothing to lose by not telling them.. I was in a similar situation. I had accepted my consulting offer in November, cashed the signing bonus, talked to the other analysts, etc. etc.... in March I got an invitation to interview with a hedge fund, told the guy I had already accepted an offer. He asked me where, I told him, and he said "oh, great firm, you'll have a good experience, good luck."

I think your situation is slightly different but I don't think there's any shady business, they probably just want to get some sort of data around where candidates from your school, with your profile end up and the resulting expectations for recruiting. Having said that, you get zero benefit from the exchange so don't do it.

I would not respond to that email. It does seem a bit too casual since they did not state that it was for recruiting purposes or to better evaluate candidates in the future etc...

I received an offer from UBS today but politely declined on the phone by telling them that I accepted an offer yesterday. The lady specifically said if you don't mind me asking where....and then I told her. She said it's a great company and best of luck.

Your situation does seem different, so I would avoid responding.
