Is UBS really that bad?

Current senior and incoming analyst to a large BB. When I was recruiting sophomore year I got my offer early in the process, so I never really got around to learning about UBS as I didn’t recruit for them. Got a return offer from my internship so never needed to learn about any bank further.

I read the UBS slander on here all the time, and it’s funny, but I know a lot of things said on forums are hyperbolic. That being said, I can’t get over how popular UBS hate is. Is UBS really that bad? How’s it possible? Didn’t they swallow up CS, which was known to be an elite bank? Was UBS ever good? Are they just dominant in non-American markets? Can they ever dominate in American markets?

For most groups there are no exits, no job security, no deals, and no WLB, all on below street average pay.

^^^ can confirm. Exits from my group were garbage even for top bucket smart people who deserved better— zero UMM or MF PE, quite a few lateraling to random corporates/banks or “exiting” to shitty LMM PE just to escape. Zero job security: layoffs multiple times a year, including solid and high performers. WLB didn’t exist. Back-to-back 100+ hour weeks were normal. Saturdays not protected. Forced 5 days in office with pure facetime culture.

Pay was 20-30th percentile vs street (if that). Most analysts never closed a real M&A deal. Just a miserable place to be an analyst or associate, staffed with the worst incompetent midlevels and seniors, constantly overworked in a toxic culture with low pay.

Upper management is pure dysfunction following the CS acquisition. How are you still hemorrhaging market share while the market is open and every peer is up? Not even top 20 in M&A advisory after getting a second bulge bracket for free.

Just not fucking worth it at any level, in any regard, in any fucking parallel universe.

Not trying to hate on your time there, but what do UBS bankers do for that many hours in person? 100h of just pitching?

How is it possible for the IBD to be so inefficient and unable to attract business even with its balance sheet?

And was it always this bad, or did it only start post-CS? I’ve always heard good things about CS, so I’m especially curious about the integration.

Hope you got out

Lol, I can see that now, but it just boggles me. How is it possible for a large bank to be so universally agreed upon as bad (for lack of a better term).

Surely they weren’t always like this? And what happened to all the CS seniors post-acquisition?

I have no friends at UBS and know nothing about it other than what I read in articles and WSO—so it’s just so hard to truly grasp.
