ivy freshman struck out at internships; what should I do this summer?

Domestic student, just finished my first year at an Ivy, but didn't land anything for the summer for my resume. Looking to recruit for IB this fall/winter for an analyst position for junior summer in NYC or boston. What can I do to get stuff on my resume this summer? Is it too late to land any sort of internship at a small bank or something? Is anything in finance worthwhile? Is anything with accounting going to look good? Any help appreciated.

Just do anything. Start-up, accounting, strategy, research at your school, etc. Just do something to gain experience in the world. Maybe even real estate, commercial real estate. Even though you are at a great school, you want something to talk about and look into.

Other than jobs, def recommend picking up a niche this summer. Find some area (ex. Healthcare) that you're interested in and learn all about it. Maybe you really like medtech within HC so look into it, read articles, read Substack, listen to podcasts, read industry primers, follow companies. You will need to set yourself apart when it comes to recruiting and the easiest way is to be passionate and knowledgable about an area in finance. Everyone will appreciate your hard work but also the people in that group (ex. Healthcare IB/investing) will really enjoy it and you can ask them some good questions. Could even be design software companies within tech, could be fashion companies within consumer, industrial tech within industrials, nuclear within energy, etc etc just find something.

I usually recommend picking up new skills. In this day and age, cannot hurt to have data skills. Some stats, python, pandas, scikit, etc. It's small but it goes a long way.

Go on searchfunder and do some bs search fund internship. That’s what I did and it was enough to speak about in interviews.

I think the best use of your time is to find something you are genuinely interested in and start writing a substack. Can be anything. No reason for this not be buttoned up with where we are at with AI.

Super under rated thing is taking the SIE

Its a exam you'll have to take entering IB anyways and it shows a lot of demonstrated interest during applications.
