JD/MBA
What do investment banks think of someone that is applying and has a JD/MBA from Harvard? I am thinking of pursuing that and I thought if it has any effect on job search (JD/MBA vs. MBA)?
The following question might be irrelevant to here but I'll ask: is there any cons to getting a JD/MBA vs. getting an MBA and getting a law degree maybe later in life?
Why not go straight for an IB position right now? I assume you have good background and grades since you potentially can get into Harvard MBA/JD.
I'd value someone with relevant experience over someone who spent $240K+ to get a JD/MBA. There are too many people I have worked with in the real world who are extremely smart academically, but are the worst to work with because they carry a chip on their shoulder and do not know how to be a team player.
But to answer your question, as long as you are normal socially, you won't have a problem getting a investment banking job after a JD/MBA from Harvard.
JD/MBA mostly go into restructuring. Unless you have experience, regular banking will be tough relative to peers. If its HLS/HBS, probably easier. I have also seen Penn, Columbia JD MBAs. Sure there are others.
Incoming law student at one of HYSCCN here. I think the worth of a joint degree really depends on your financial situation, what your professional goals are after grad school-and by extension- what your pre-JD/MBA work experience is.
Most people discourage JD/MBAs because of the cost and the fact that there are very few areas where having both degrees would be very useful. Ones that come to mind are distressed debt investing/PE and-to a lesser extent-merger arbitrage. On the sell-side, RX banking falls into this category. For all of these, however, having actual experience as a lawyer,(especially on the distressed side of things), would be way more valuable than the law degree by itself.
The buyside options are only available to people who came into the programs with the right work experience. Virtually all did IBanking at a top BB or EB, and most did some pre-MBA buyside stint, either in PE or at a HF. RX banking requires solid work experience as well given it's smaller size in relation to other types of banking, but I don't think prior IBanking experience is required if you're coming from a top program.
If none of these jobs are on your radar, I wouldn't pursue both degrees unless you want to practice law before moving into finance and/or have very wealthy parents. You don't need to shell out an additional $250K and the extra time in school to go to HLS, CLS or Chicago when you plan on pursuing MBB consulting or a standard IB coverage position.
If i am correct Mitt Romney has both a M.B.A/J.D from Harvard. Please correct me if I wrong but don't you need to apply and get admitted into both schools of law and business?
