Jewish IB Analysts: Keeping Sabbath?
Hi all,
Niche question but: heading towards a summer internship, hoping to go FT, at a BB in London (although NY perspectives welcome).
Am beginning to question the possibility of this career path given my observance of the Sabbath/Shabbat. I'm aware being unavailable 1/7th of the week isn't ideal in this line of work.
Do any Jewish analysts here have experience in keeping Sabbath? Is it possible? Any seniors with Jewish analysts around here?

Haha. This is a genuine concern though - any actual insights or is this genuinely somewhat true given the high proportion of Jews there?
Honestly the only role of an intern and analyst is to support the rest of the team whenever asked to. You are a tool/resource for your team and you have to be trusted. How can I trust someone that I cannot reach 1 day a week if there is a business need? You either have to reconsider your career choices or your religious activities. Friend of mine was in the office on Christmas day so that just tells you the level of fucks given.

did you tell your firm this when you were interviewing for the internship? are you planning on not working the sundays of your internship?
I hadn’t told them. I was given the advice not to. I’ll tell them before I start - it is far more common in New York to be a Jewish investment banker than in London, that’s my only concern.
EDIT: Obviously Saturday nights and Sundays I plan on working!
I know an analyst said that Saturday after 7-Sunday at 2 is off limits so he can attend church. this was NY but as an intern and first 6 months as an analyst you have to do what is requested of you.

I know several Associates, VPs and MDs who are very observant and able to 100% keep their hours. Where do you think the "junior banker initiatives" of "Protected Saturdays" comes from (can't work from night time on Friday to morning on Sunday)? I bet you don't need a hint.
I work at a BB in NY and keep shabbos. I know 10+ others in IB doing the same. Be respectful, come to the office right when you can Sat night, etc.
Totally doable. I personally keep shabbos, and so do 20+ other analysts through MDs that I know. Because you're taking Saturday off, you have to be extra available during the rest of the week, and be available as soon as you can Saturday night, but people are understandable about religious things like this. GS/MS/JPM and some EBs as well are very used to Jews keeping shabbos
yeah you’re fine. any financial institution would look awful letting you go after you tell them you need to take 24 hours during the week for well documented religious reasons, never mind it’s the ethical thing to support your religion and also you not feeling guilty all week long will make you a better analyst. you played it right with not telling them before. you might have to work harder than other analysts during the 6 days you’re on, good luck let us know how it goes
