Junior Summer Analyst to Full Time
Hi! I'm a student at a target school (Harvard, Wharton, Yale, etc.) and was fortunate enough to land a summer internship at a middle market bank (Oppenheimer, Scotia, etc.). While I'm genuinely grateful for the opportunity, I wanted to ask — if the experience doesn't end up being the right fit, is it realistic to recruit for full-time roles at bulge bracket or elite boutique firms?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it is absolutely realistic to recruit for full-time roles at bulge bracket (BB) or elite boutique (EB) firms after a summer internship at a middle market (MM) bank. However, there are a few key factors to consider:
Networking is Crucial: Start building relationships early with professionals at BB and EB firms. Use your summer in NYC (if applicable) to attend networking events, set up coffee chats, and connect with alumni or other contacts in your target firms.
Performance in Your Internship: Even if the MM experience isn't the perfect fit, performing well and securing a return offer can significantly strengthen your candidacy. It demonstrates reliability and competence, which BB and EB firms value.
Timing of Full-Time Recruiting: Full-time recruiting for BB and EB firms often begins early, sometimes even before your summer internship concludes. Be prepared to juggle networking and interviews while completing your internship.
Positioning Your Experience: Highlight the transferable skills and deal exposure you gained during your MM internship. Firms care about your ability to contribute immediately, so focus on showcasing relevant technical and soft skills.
Challenges to Anticipate: While it's possible, transitioning from MM to BB/EB can be competitive. Candidates from BB/EB summer programs often have an edge due to familiarity with the firm's culture and processes. You'll need to differentiate yourself through networking, strong interview performance, and a compelling story.
In summary, while it’s competitive, many have successfully made the leap from MM to BB/EB for full-time roles. Focus on excelling in your current role, networking strategically, and preparing thoroughly for interviews.
