Lateral for FT from Asia after working at a good bank for SA.

If I have the possibility of working at a good bank in Asia next summer, what are the chances of me being able to lateral to the US full-time given I get a return offer?

Also, if sponsorship is not an issue, would this be viewed differently?

Nothing is difficult, and lateralling can be fairly straightforward. However, this is dependent on number of things:

1. The demand in the US offices: and frankly given the state of economy going into 2023, not sure how this will pan out.

2. Recruiting timelines: you are competing against peers who participate in standard recruiting by the banks from schools in the US; NY/SF/LA, etc. - would have finished their recruitment and the only slots left would be ones where people reneg (and even then there's a waitlist generally).

Your best shot is to seek transfer internally with your EB (you will have to be very clear with your motivations for applying to Asia in the first place and now wanting out- seems a little sus to me that you want to be in Asia but don't); if not, you should continue to network with everyone, and wait for the right opportunity. Best of luck.

That's fine, you did what you thought was best for you. It's clearly sus as I thought it was - you picked Asia because you missed out on US deadlines. Anyways this doesn't matter - just make sure you do NOT say this to your EB or anyone else (I'm at an EB and this will be an instant ding unfortunately and you will end up burning your bridges with the local team). You have to have a clear story on why Asia in first place, and why US now. Best of luck!
