Lateraling Less Than 3 Months In?

Was fortunate to find an IB analyst job in this market at a regional boutique, but have seen postings for full time roles - was wondering if it would be poor practice to apply and try to network to see if other roles would be possible so early in?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on lateraling early in your career:

  1. Timing and Networking:

    • It's generally advisable to spend some time in your current role to build experience and credibility. However, if you see compelling opportunities, it might be worth exploring them.
    • Networking is crucial. Reach out to people in the firms you're interested in to learn more about their culture and opportunities. This can help you make informed decisions and potentially get referrals.
  2. Application Strategy:

    • Applying to positions and then following up with emails to associates and senior bankers in the group can be effective. This shows initiative and can set you apart from other candidates.
    • Be prepared for these interactions as they can often turn into informal interviews.
  3. Risks and Considerations:

    • There is a risk involved in lateraling too early, such as being perceived as a job hopper. This can be mitigated by clearly articulating your reasons for the move and how it aligns with your career goals.
    • Ensure that you are not burning bridges at your current firm, as the finance industry is tightly knit and reputations can follow you.
  4. Internal Mobility:

    • If your current firm has an internal mobility program, consider leveraging it. This can sometimes be a safer route to transition into a different role or team within the same firm.
  5. Market Conditions:

    • Given the current market conditions, it might be more challenging to find new roles. Weigh the stability of your current position against the potential benefits of a new opportunity.

In summary, while it is possible to lateral early in your career, it requires careful consideration, strategic networking, and a clear understanding of the risks and benefits involved.
