Law, Letters, & Society Major at UChicago
I will be attending the University of Chicago in the fall. The major in which I am most interested is the "Law, Letters, & Society" major, which to my knowledge is a major specific to the University. (https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/academics/majorsminors/lawletter…). The major itself covers economics, politics, and law, so it does encompass all of my interests.
However, I am concerned about it's marketability outside of moving on to Law School or entering the political sphere. If I am to forgo a career in law or politics, how would the major effect my ability to claim a spot at an investment bank like GS, JPM, etc?
Any thoughts?
I think it sounds stupid as shit. If somebody told me they had a degree in "law, letters & society" I would want to slap them hard in the face just to prove a point. Open palm. Not hard enough that people around us who happened to see would think it was anything more than a joke, but hard enough that the slappee would notice and remember.
Will you not get hired at an investment bank because of it? No, I think plenty of colleges have equally stupid sounding degrees, and if you get good grades and check all the boxes you'll be fine.
You'll always remember that slap though.
OP - LL&S is one of the most elite majors at UofC. My graduating class of ~1200 had less than ~15 kids accepted into the program. Although most go on to actually study some form of law, I have seen some go into finance.
One of the MDs at the fund I work for is a LL&S graduate from UC...
I would go for it - the crossover between UC Econ and the LL&S program will make a strong pedigree for whatever you want to do after college.
