I have an SA offer at a smaller bank in Houston but my end goal is to work in NY. How do I leverage my SA internship to land something in NY?
I did not network at all, but I am looking to start during this winter break. I accepted the offer because it was one of the few opportunities I have to gain IB experience, so instead of continually going through the recruiting process and with an offer in hand, I accepted.
Also in regards to networking, should I mention that I have an internship this summer and I am looking to leave even though I haven't even started or received a return offer?

I'll bite. First, congrats on the SA offer. I obviously don't know the bank you are interning with, but, given that it is in a Tier 2/3 city for IB (with the exception of the Energy practices), you need to be realistic about the opportunities you will have in NY. You need to start a conscious and planned networking outreach and have clear rationale for 1) why you are interning in Houston and 2) why you want to be in NY. Try to set up informational interviews with anyone you can to get your foot in the door (personally I would look at boutique shops with the goal of lateraling out after my first year). I know an analyst who was actually in Houston for 1 year before lateraling to a small NY shop, but he has made numerous connections since making the jump. The key to his move was his ability to leverage and expand his network.
Regarding your question, I would definitely mention your internship as it is still relevant experience and better than not interning at all. Make your end goal clear, that you would like to be in NY, and have good reasons to back it up.
Most importantly (and despite what so many people on this site preach), there are many ways to move within the industry so don't get discouraged by all the posts on here telling you what you "have" to do to end up at a BB or in PE. Make the most of your internship, network, and nail the interview opportunities you get.

The advice above is really good. The only thing I would add is, I don't know your exact situation, but I exercise some caution with networking now - from my experience banks in Houston are extremely wary of people accepting SA positions just to try to lateral to NYC full time. Now, if you were open about wanting to end up in NY for FT in your interviews, you have nothing to worry about, but if you indicated to them that this was not the case and they find out you're already looking for other FT offers, they could very realistically rescind your offer or at very least ruin your summer experience with them and purposefully not give you a return offer, which would seriously impede your ability to successful land another ft position.

I am interning this summer at a BB in Houston (IBD). Unfortunately, my school is not a target school for the NY offices. All the job postings at my school are for Houston offices, and the recruiters are unwilling to pass my resume to the NY offices (I tried asking this for SA).
How can I leverage my summer experience to get a full-time position in NY (either through my current firm or another BB)?
The only option I can think of is asking the bank I am working at this summer to help put me in touch with the NY offices at the end of summer. Any advice?
