Leveraging a Big Pharma internship to a Healthcare Banking role

Hi all,

I recently received confirmation that my 1 year finance internship at a FTSE 100 Pharma company (Pfizer, J&J, Roche etc) is within a Financial Analysis team at their 'Centre of Excellence' supporting their medical devices business.

While it isn't Treasury or Corp Fin it could of been lease, audit or tax. I am curious to find out how this experience would be valued in banking.

What steps could I take to fully utilise the opportunity? What divisions, firms, internships and analyst programs would be most appropriate for this type of experience.

Thanks!

(UK but all tips are appreciated)

You should target healthcare groups directly rather than generalist programs. Reach out to them, have an explanatory email (not five paragraphs though) and explain why you want banking. Healthcare groups love to see actual healthcare exposure, so make sure you’re ready to talk about what you’ve done and how you think about your next steps within healthcare. Just please make sure you do your research on what the focus is of each group, for example, if the group is only doing biotech, mention what you liked about medtech and why biotech is more exciting (but only if you mean it, don’t try bsing your way through it). Best of luck!
