Lied about bonus to future employer
Currently an Analyst at a boutique IB in London and will likely be receiving an offer from a BB/EB in the coming days.
The recruitment team have asked for my last bonus a couple times now, and I inflated my bonus figure (by c.20k) as I wanted to give them a good impression (my last bonus was ok but not incredible). Now, it appears they will offer to buy out the deferred part of my bonus, and will likely need proof of this bonus figure. What can I do?
Options to me are:
1. Tell them I miscommunicated the figure and give them the real number - they will know I lied and could rescind the offer?
2. Stay with the lie and tell them I appreciate the intention of buying out my deferred bonus, but it's not a significant amount of $$$ and turn down the buyout - they'll think something is off?
3. Tell them my current IB have offered to still pay me a portion of my deferred bonus (as my notice period is long & to keep me motivated) - not sure this ever happens in the industry?
Any advice would be very welcome!!
How close are you to your next bonus? You could try to spin it and say something like your bonus expectation in x months. Given your last bonus was almost a year ago, it was less relevant
The deferred portion of the bonus is due to be paid in 2-3 months, which is the part they will likely offer to buy out. The larger portion of the bonus is 7-8 months away.
I am lateralling and they asked for a proof of the bonus amount. Not sure why you thought it was smart to lie about it
Did they ask for proof of bonus because they compensated you for any of it? Or asked for it regardless
No they weren’t going to compensate it because I had just been paid by my current employer. They asked for the proof regardless (probably to check also what was my ranking)
Tell them you have signed to say you can not disclose
he already disclosed a fake #
My bank doesn’t tell us our promised figure? Say the bank would put it in writing
