Living with bankers vs nonbankers
Will be a first year analyst and am thinking about my living situation for next year. Currently debating whether to live with friends that are also doing IBD or friends that have more normal jobs.
On the one hand, I think it would be nice to live with bankers given that we could all be understanding of the lifestyle and commiserate together to some extent.
On the other hand, I can see it being frustrating if I get home early one night and nobody is home. I also have this idea that it is important to surround myself with people that are not doing finance to make sure that I maintain some perspective and remain grounded. But I think it's also possible living with people that have a lot more free time will make me feel shitty about working so much. Plus I don't want to be the roommate that is never home and is always canceling plans.
Anybody have any insights?
Doesn't matter. You'll feel shitty either way tbo. I luckily lived with the guys I worked with as an repe analyst (longer story but they put us up in temp housing for 8 weeks and it was simply logical to all move in together-the bonus of working in RE when the firm owned furnished apartments) and while that occasionally got old because we were always together, it worked out pretty well. We were all new to the city (SF) and got to live the same life of working too much and debauchery. But it would have been nice to get to know other non finance/RE folks and see how they lived.
If you have real friends who work in non IB type of jobs I'd do it. If it's just random or near randoms, it doesn't matter.
I am also in your situation and have chosen to live with a good friend who is also going to be a banker because of the similar lifestyles. There are other ways to remain grounded/keep perspective than living with people who aren't bankers, and as I'll be working at a so-called sweatshop I would prefer to live with someone who has to deal with the same stuff I do rather than coming home late on a Friday exhausted when I have to be at work early Saturday and still having to deal with people partying/loud/me getting no sleep.
I like the fact that if I want to go out etc I still can, but I won't be forced to deal with it when I don't want to if I live with a fellow banker who will also be working hard.
