Love to hear from current Analysts/Associates on when cold emails are appropriate?

Hey everyone — I’m a rising sophomore at NYU Stern, currently spending the summer trying to build some more connections and learn more from others in IB roles.

That said, I’ve been wondering how people actually feel when they receive cold emails from students like me — especially during the summer when things are (presumably) quieter. I don’t want to come off as overly eager or annoying by “networking too early,” but I also worry that once the semester starts, everyone will be sending the same outreach and it’ll be harder to stand out.

Curious to hear from anyone who’s been on the receiving end:

  • Do you mind cold emails over the summer?
  • Is now actually a good time to reach out, or should I wait until fall recruiting picks up?

Would appreciate any insight — trying to be respectful while still taking initiative. Thanks!

Honestly you're overthinking it.

Who cares if some people mind? If you have genuine intentions (i.e. trying to learn for now rather than asking referrals), then who cares. Like so what if some associate sees your email and goes "wow this is early, it's only summer, I'm trying to relax" (unrealistic btw, summer is quieter, not dead). I guarantee he will forget who you are and what your name is within 30 seconds.
