Since becoming an MD its only become more clear to me. I will be making a push to not hire anyone without an analyst background.

1) They can run process - a second year analyst who has done this ten times already can do that better
2) You can think "strategically" - Really how much strategic thinking do you do after catching sht from your MDs
3) You have "professional maturity" - burning analysts for hours on preferences is "maturity", I bet the analyst's work looks better than theirs

not in IB so I don't know how it works but my guess would be that they want to hire outgoing saleschads who could potentially make money for the company in the future. instead of being a cost center, as the lowly analysts are.

Clearly a troll but as an MBA Associate, I don’t entirely disagree. At an EB and did the “analyst role” (in responsibilities only, not title) for first ~6-8 months on the desk and think it’s necessary to add any value down the line. Not true of peers at BBs.
Going to an EB FT as an MBA associate, any tips for ramping up before hitting the desk? Trying to also come in with the mentality that I’ll do the analyst role for the first 6-9 months
It’ll take you longer than that. Make sure you’re better than your analysts at everything you ask them to do (sans maybe .ppt). Being known as a killer by the juniors is supremely helpful for career development. The clown buck-passers get a negative rep extremely quickly.
Did analyst work my first 12 months(and would report direct to an md) I can model just as well as the analysts now.

Where I'm heading it looks like we (mba assoc) do analyst work for more or less the first year. MBA associates are kind of a necessary evil given the 2 and out structure. I could see why analysts resent mba associates, but it is what it is.
That’s a really good point — pretty funny to hear an analyst with a signed-18-months-early offer from ~KKR bitching about the associates not having analyst-type experience.
(And yes, I did plenty of the above in banking, lol).
