MD doesn't know I got HR dinged?

Networked with the MD of a street-known group a while back. I'd kill for a role in her group. Coming from a complete obscure non-target, this would change my career trajectory tenfold.

She contacted me out of the blue months later saying - "Hey anon, we're hiring in our group and I want to push your resume through. Apply and send me a text."

What she doesn't know is that I already applied and got dinged by HR before even a first round... I had hoped to get to the second/third round before getting in touch with her.

I can't reapply under the same account for the same job posting - use a different email/account? Sketchy; I know.

Or should I come clean to her?

I'm not going down without a fight.

I would send her your resume and tell her you applied and got a standard rejection email but are very interested in her group for x,y,z reasons and would really appreciate an opportunity to interview.

Honestly, if she is going to push your resume through she can reverse the decision on the rejection. I’ve done this for candidates, especially if the rejection was pre-interview (so no real feedback about being awful at the interview, etc).

A bit of a risk (she may decide against it), but I think better than creating another account (but that’s just me). Maybe others have gone that route, I’d be stressed about it.

Honestly I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

There is a negative caveat I need to mention - I was rejected from another group at the bank within the past 12 months after 2nd round. I botched a time constrained case study after pulling 2 consecutive all-nighters for my current role. The calls with the team were very positive besides that. They wouldn't let me push back the case which really screwed me.

I did not network for the first opportunity.

Doesn’t seem like a dealbreaker. As others have said, be straightforward, concise and reiterate your desire to work there. If the other call with the group was neutral and there were no major flags you’ll normally get another chance.

If an MD refers you should automatically get an interview. They’ll look at the other feedback, but they’ll overrule HR if they see something they like.

what's the deal with applying with another account? do you get automatically dinged by the software?

Agree with the comments below. You have 2 options:

Not trying and staying in the same position.

Just tell her that you got a standard rejection from HR but that you would be very keen to participate in the process. Worst case she just tells you that she is sorry but she can't do anything, best case she pushes to get in the process again. Looking at the message that she sent you, I think that it is veeery likely that she would push for you, given that it was her the one that approached you to apply, so if she was happy to push in a standard process, she will be happy to push to get you in again.

Also as personal advice, don't waste too much time explaining the situation, it is really simple, you just got dinged, but you would love to get in the process again; plain and simple. Just say that and send an updated CV, that's it.

This was the slap in the face answer I needed.

I still don't know why though? I'm nothing special or even have that great of a resume; just a grinder. Maybe I'm still in disbelief that something like this would happen. All I can say is that I'm happy someone sees something in me.

Can't reapply without opening another account with an alternate email. I would just be hoping HR doesn't flag my personal info as a reapplicant.

Had a friend who had a similar story (they got rejected at stage 1 of the process by HR, but reached out to an MD who pushed for the application (alumnus from the same school). My friend reapplied with a new email address. Didn't mention anything to the MD tho. HR saw nothing. A bit bold but got the job.
