Or rather, why would you pursue becoming a partner in a pe fund instead of trying to make MD at a bank? It appears much more difficult to make partner at a PE fund due to competition, limited number of open spots, etc. Not to say that making MD isn’t difficult, but making partner seems much harder

Funniest

I would simultaneously be both MD at a bank and partner at a PE firm. I would exclusively hire my bank for my PE acquisitions and reap those phat fees. With all the money, I would buy cocaine. LIKE SO MUCH COCAINE. I NEED COCAINE

One is easier and pays well, one is a lot harder and pays very well

Easier being MD?

meant easier to get to but yeah, probably easier to be as well.  there are a lot of MDs out there who aren't rockstars but make a steady 2+ million dollars a year just by being close to their clients and generating a lot of capital markets flow and some m&a.  and some don't even do much execution.
