Mid to Bottom Bucket Associate

I know through my conversations that I am between mid to bottom bucket. How do I improve for next year? I personally feel that I was not lucky with my projects and didn't get lot of good experience, leading to me being at this stage. Would this impression stay for years to come or does this change with next good project?

Was there any other feedback? You don't give anyone much of a chance to help you out.

There are probably a few reasons to consider: are you always late on deliverables (time management), are you consistently making the same mistakes (attention to detail), are you consistently missing the point of the deliverable (communication), are you being proactive to get on good projects, asking good questions, showing an interest?

Or are your skills just not there?

I haven’t received a formal feedback but my guess is my skill set is not there yet. For example I have not been on an end to end deal yet, so I have to go to my VP for guidance on every step. I do good when I’m told what needs to be done but that’s not an Associate job. A good Associate is one where VP doesn’t have to focus on the deal at all and I’m not there yet and I’m getting anxious about it. The reason is more to do with the number of deals I have worked on than my ability to learn ( I believe). My biggest worry is if the team would now feel I’m stupid and not want to work with me or could this be overcome?

I’m a VP, I definitely would not rate someone bottom bucket just because he or she asked for next steps on a transaction no less, I’m literally here to provide guidance.

if you’re a mid to bottom bucket associate I’d guess you’re either 1)making the same mistakes repeatedly or 2) communicating poorly/ not managing deliverables well (late, don’t understand why you’re doing something so it’s completely different than what your senior is looking for or 3) a lack of self awareness or emotional intelligence. As an analyst or associate if you crank out quality work product on time and don’t make the same mistakes twice, you’re going to get a good rating, senior bankers only care about how easy you make their lives. If you don’t get a good rating, It’s usually some combination of the above 3 but you haven’t really give enough detail.
