Military Service and Investment Banking
I am currently a student at Texas A&M in the Business Honors program studying Finance and Accounting. I want to serve as a Navy SEAL at some point during my life, but I want to end up working in Investment Banking, and eventually Private Equity. My school has a great deal of recruiting events and internship possibilities for Wall Street firms. However, my concern is that if I graduate in a few years and intern while I am a student, then go off to serve for 6 years, I feel that although I would have connections with the companies I interned at, they would have been weakened by my absence. Would it be better to serve after this year (I am a freshman, but sophomore by hours), and then come back to finish my education later and still have internship opportunities through my school or should I finish my education now, then go serve, and try to take advantage of some military personnel recruitment programs to get into Investment Banking?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
thanks for your prospective service ... my $.02 would be to get undergrad out of the way before anything, serve, then go to B-school. My thought is that you are more likely to go back to school if you already obtained your BA/BS.
I have read a handful of "breaking in" stories from a military background ... doing some digging and seeing what others have done is probably your best bet
That's great point. I think most companies have some sort of program to help recruit veterans and it would be nice to have my degree already. I will keep looking around and thanks again for the advice.
Mandatory Military Service Hinders IB Recruiting? (Originally Posted: 08/05/2012)
Hey guys,
I am kind of in a weird situation here. I have mandatory military service that I need to serve for my home country and I am currently an international student. So, if I haven't finished this mandatory service yet would it be a huge problem for SA recruiting? If I were to get a FT offer then they will have to sponsor my Visa and I have heard that this might be a problem for individuals from countries who have to serve in the army. Hope some people can shed light on this.
go to the army before your SA
While I was in banking, I knew a number of analysts and summer analysts who had performed mandatory military service for their native country. I think the most typical approach was to get it out of the way somewhat earlier on during or before college, and then go through the normal recruiting process. Others, if I recall correctly, might have summered in banking and then tried to defer their full-time offer, but I think this is more rare and difficult to do.
Most of the big banks are willing to sponsor visas today. During the TARP era this was an issue but I think that's mostly a thing of the (not too distant) past.
