Moelis Houston Exit Opps?

Hey all...primarily wondering how the exit opps. out of Moelis HTX are in 2024. Have seen exits to places like BX Credit, Apollo Energy, and Tailwater in recent years, and know they are building out their CleanTech practice alongside their Global Energy group. The coverage group is responsible for the RX process at the junior level as well. I know the Moelis name/alumnus are strong, but wondering how much that is limited coming out of HTX. Is it a stretch to land at a place like TPG in Dallas, Vista in Austin, or even UMM/MF Infra. funds in places like NY? Emphasis on UMM/MF infra. b/c that is of strong interest to me. Any insight is greatly appreciated

Several alumni from my school in / exited from this group.

Solid shop in terms of dealflow, Moelis name carries well, and exits are still mainly energy, but have to keep self selection in mind.

MF opportunities exist mainly in energy, analyst have exited almost only to energy MFs (BX, Apollo), but for analysts who want to go more generalist, there have certainly been exits to shops like GI Partners, and seems like MDP takes their fair share of Houston IB analysts.

Will have to disagree with response above, using your example, as I don’t think I would reasonably expect a shot at TPG Dallas or Vista Austin offer (just because they’re in Texas), as you would be competing against the massive pool of NYC/SF analysts who are more competitive and relevant for those roles.

This is very helpful...and I agree with your comment about Vista/TPG - makes no sense for an O&G banker to exit to Tech/HC...although if I join the CleanTech group I wonder how much that would change regarding Tech...

Also very interesting how MDP has a group of Houston recruits. I guess I am singling out Moelis in this situation but should be looking at Energy IB exits as a whole. If anything, Moelis should be better since they have the RX capabilities

You will be fine in terms of exits. Know someone on that team and most of the An2’s are going to NY for UMM and one MF (I believe most for infra). Might be an uphill battle for generalist roles though.

That is awesome to hear about Infra exits to UMM/MF PE, and I agree with the latter half about generalist recruiting. I know returns in Infra. aren't the best, but it seems like LP's are willing to allocate a decent amount due to its stability/security (or so I'm told)

Seen exits to MF infra/energy shops in NYC. The hardest part is having the will power to complete the 2 year stint. You're gnna get rekt at Moelis, especially after Moelis revamping their energy group with poaching two coked out rain makers this past year

Those “rain makers” you talk about essentially got pushed out from Gugg for not delivering lmao.

They’re done with recruiting bruh (from what I’ve heard)
