Moving from Canada to the US

I have seen this is a very discussed topic on this forum. However, I was wondering what the process was like for people who have moved to the US as lateral hires from Canada.

Did you reach out to headhunters or just simply get back on the cold networking grind?

I am an analyst at a Big 5 bank in Toronto and am very much interested in making the move to the US for personal as well as professional reasons. Any advice is appreciated

Applied directly online and got an invite for round 1 shortly after submitting the application. Interviews lasted for ~1 month comprised of modeling test, back to back interviews with the team and management (6~7 ppl for 30 mins each). Once I got the offer, the legal team proceeded with TN visa which took 2 months w/ premium processing with USCIS (took longer cuz I got RFE’ed).

I would say lateraling is hard because of uncertainties associated with the TN visa approval and the team has to wait longer for Canadians to move compared to an American who can immediately start.

But once you are in - US banks sponsor H1B visa lottery each year.

Thanks this was very insightful & also congrats! Crazy that you were able to cold apply online. Did you find much difficulty with them asking why you wanted to move from Canada?

They were genuinely curious to know why I wanted to move. But it was easy to justify since the US market is significantly bigger and more dynamic compared to the Canadian market. They were all understanding

Nope - moved here for college and started my career here. I’m an international citizen tho (not Canada) and due to H1B, other personal stuff and professional dev as you mentioned, looking to make the move from US to UK.
