Moving from Capital Markets to Corp Finance
Just a quick question for those working on the Corporate Finance/PE side of the business. I was working in FX Corporate Sales for about 3 years but unfortunately was let go. My question is, how hard is it to move over to a job in a Corp Fin/PE role. Obviously i would not be the typical candidate given my practical experience is not with transaction based modeling but im pretty confident i could pick up on that fairly quick. Any advice/input would be appreciated
i assume ur referencing to banking when saying corp fin. depends i guess, An associate/sr. analyst role with boutiques (assuming you have your Series 7 & 63), could be possible. I know analysts who have worked in capital markets (primarily marketing IPOs and follow ons) move to fund of funds/co-investment/traditional PE. They are some cold-calling PE firms that you could make a strong case for assuming you have good sales skills and a rolodex.
of course this was all in a good market. There are plenty of boutiques where the modeling is not really necessary, its pretty much using CapIQ to build comps. Maybe a DCF. I've heard there have been plenty of PIPEs and rights offerings occuring that are primarily all a capital markets/sales process.
I don't think moving into a corp fin/PE role is going to be easy since there are many just as or overqualified people out there looking for work. Not that it was easy to begin with, it is possible though.
We're about to enter a Great Depression. Don't you want a president who's already dressed for it?
I'm just in college so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I've read on here, getting the CFA designation would probably help you out
pretty sure nobody cares about the CFA on the corp fin side of things (as opposed to say asset mgmt, where it's a valued degree)...
Second the comment that CFA will not help with the transition to a banking/coverage role. Different skill sets, the CFA will help for Asset Management.
guess I got it confused
