Moving to Nordics from London

Going to be slightly vague.

I'll be starting my graduate job in a financing team in IB at a BB in London this summer. I'm from Sweden, but studied in the UK and have a long-term goal to move back at some point.

How feasible is this and how is this usually done, from people who have done similar?

Thanks.

Ah, the classic journey from the bustling streets of London back to the serene landscapes of the Nordics. Based on the most helpful WSO content, making a move from London to the Nordics, especially in the investment banking (IB) sector, is indeed a path tread by many before you. Here's a breakdown of how feasible this move is and the usual steps involved:

  1. Building a Strong Foundation in London: Starting your career in a financing team at a Bulge Bracket (BB) in London is a fantastic move. London's financial market is highly competitive and offers a wealth of experience. Make the most of this opportunity to build a solid foundation, focusing on developing a strong skill set, understanding the intricacies of the market, and networking extensively.

  2. Networking with a Nordic Focus: While you're in London, start building your network with a focus on the Nordics. This includes connecting with professionals working in the Nordic markets, attending events or conferences focused on Nordic finance, and joining relevant groups on professional networking sites. The finance community is tightly knit, and having a strong network can significantly ease your transition.

  3. Understanding the Nordic Market: The Nordic market, while robust, operates differently from London's. It's essential to understand these differences, the key players in the market, and the sectors that are thriving. This knowledge will not only help you in making a smoother transition but also in tailoring your application to suit the Nordic market's needs.

  4. Looking for Internal Transfer Opportunities: Many Bulge Bracket banks have offices in Nordic countries. An internal transfer could be one of the most straightforward ways to move. Perform exceptionally well in your role, express your interest in moving to the Nordics to your HR department, and keep an eye out for opportunities within your firm.

  5. Leveraging Recruiters Specialized in the Nordics: There are recruiters who specialize in the finance sector in the Nordics. Connecting with them can provide you with insights into the market, advice on making the move, and information on job opportunities.

  6. Being Flexible: While your ultimate goal might be to move back to Sweden, being open to opportunities in other Nordic countries can also be a good strategy. The Nordic region is well-connected, and gaining experience in one Nordic country can be a stepping stone to moving to another.

  7. Timing Your Move: Consider the timing of your move carefully. Gaining enough experience in London to make you a valuable candidate in the Nordics is crucial. Additionally, keep an eye on the economic climate and job market in the Nordics to time your move when the market is favorable.

Based on previous WSO threads, many have successfully made this transition by following a similar path. It requires planning, patience, and a bit of strategic networking, but it's certainly feasible. Best of luck with your journey from London to the Nordics, and may you find success in bringing your expertise back home!

Im not Swedish or „nordic“ for that matter but studied at SSE

In my experience, Swedish exit opps are still very „prestige driven“ as many people have worked in London or New York before returning home and working at well known firms (EQT, Nordic capital, cevian, etc)

So short answer to your question: 100% feasible, depending on what you want to do even a slight advantage to people that stayed at home

I'm mostly looking to stay in banking, not really exit to PE or such.

Yes totally doable and it is very common for Nordic folks to go back home once starting a family and such. Ofc helpful to have a network back home. I think you should reach out to the Nordic banks division heads of whatever it is that you're doing if you're looking to stay in banking. Lateraling to your banks local office is of course a choice if they have one there as well.

Edit: probably in your favor to stay in London and work for a year or two first.

Hahahaha, seems like it's always like grass is greener on the other side. I am just tired of London now. Ofc I am going to stay a few years, build experience, but then I will see.

Hoppas vi tajmar! But to your point, yes its def possible to move to banking roles in Sweden from London. Most of the BB MDs started in London. Interestingly, most of these examples relate to jumps to competitors rather than internal transfers
