Need Advice- Screwed Up Badly

I emailed a couple of alums last night, and one called me this morning when I was asleep. We spoke for about 30 min about his firm, my resume, etc., and he said he'd put in a good word (not great BB, but large commerical bank- think JPM, Wachovia, BoA).

Later this morning, another one of my e-mails responded (with an analyst), but I thought it was the guy from the first bank. I addressed him as if he were from the first bank, and talked about our conversation that we had, the culture, what I learned, etc. The analyst responds and is confused about what I'm saying, and calls out that I said he was from Bank A, when he actually was from Bank B. He did, however, attempt to keep contact, stating that he'd clear everything up over the weekend.

I e-mailed and told him that I spoke with somebody else that morning w/ the same name, and tried to reconcile.

Am I totally screwed at the 2nd bank? I assume that my e-mail folly has blown up in my face, and is totally being passed around the office. Anybody have any advice?

I was just worried because it looks really unprofessional. Also, I thought of it from their POV- if you can't send us a "right e-mail" and you don't proofread it, how can we expect you to not embarass us in front of clients?

You can probably spin it easily with the idea that you have a lot going on and as smuguy said, they do know you are talking to other firms.

Having that said however, be careful with cover letters and follow ups. I have had friends in recruiting tell me that they have rejected perfectly good candidates because they screw up the name of the bank on the cover. Remember, attention to detail is huge in this business. They don't want you putting the name of the wrong company on the pitchbook.

reminds me of when a contact from my internship emailed a MD at a bank for me and sent over my resume with a cover letter for another BB bank(which he also helped me at), i never heard back...

They know you are talking to other places. I have seen this hurt people before (including myself), but it's not always an automatic ding. Nothing you can do now. Just learn from this mistake and be more careful in the future.

Don't blow it out of proportion. Just move forward, and try to make other contacts at that bank.
