Need to take vacation in a month

Hi all,

I will start as a 1st year analyst and will need to leave the office in October for a week due to some serious personal reasons (there's no way I can postpone/cancel this). Can anyone advice me on how I should approach my bankers about this? I know some analysts (also associates and VP) in my group so I guess I can ask them for advice but what would you do in my situation?

This has been bothering me a lot because I really want to make a good first impression so I just want to see how I can minimize the damage...

Thank you so much for all the help!

Whats the big deal? Just be honest and tell them what the REAL scenario is.

Don't make up a story. A banker friend of mine was in a similar situation. He was a 2nd year analyst and was in the thick of a live deal that was really heating up. The group was pretty understaffed and everyone had been getting killed, but he had to take off for a week for a good friend's bachelor party in Vegas. Long story short, the situation had potential to look pretty bad... everyone's getting killed and he tells his MD he's going to Vegas for a week for his friend's bachelor party. Anyway, he was completely honest. Told him it was a really close friend and he had to go, was complete upfront and even told him he was going to Vegas. As it turns out, he ended up running into a work acquaintance on the golf course who insists the two groups play out the rest of the course together. When he gets back home, the MD tells him "I heard you play a mean golf game. Good for you you didn't make up some bullshit excuse, or you would have been fucked." True story.

Now imagine if he had told him he had to go to Phoenix to visit his grandmother who has 3 days to live... and a friend of the MD's calls him up and says "hey, I'm in Vegas and just played a round of golf with your analysts I met on that So-and-So deal we did last fall"

Its not a big deal. Just give it to him straight.

Definetely be upfront about it, tell them the real deal like other people have mentioned on here; I would be proactive and not wait till you hit the desk, some people don't like surprises so don't be like: "Hey I'm here for my first day of work, btw I have to take a week off next week..." Tell them where you'll be, why you have to go, that you'll have your blackberry and access to the internet, the time difference and that you're willing to work on whatever needs to be done while your away (even though they might not take you up on that, you will save face I think). Good luck!

A surgery and a wedding are on 2 different levels. One saves lives and the other ruins them.

Sounds to me like your reason isn't really legit so you are best to just be straight up with your boss and tell them that you really WANT to do it, not need to.

Regards

Only you can be the judge of whether it "needs" to be done, or it is simply something you "want" to do. It seems as though it is something that you have to do -- in that case, you need to present it as such to your staffer/seniors. If you present it as something you simply "want" to do, not only will that look bad, but the likelihood of them granting you the time off is between 0 and 10 percent. If, however, you present it as something you are doing, but want to be as flexible and as accessible as possible, they may not be thrilled about it but they are much, much less likely to tell you no.
