Networking for SA positions

Background: Current freshman that has begun networking with alumni from some of the BBs.

I'm beginning to be more comfortable meeting with bankers and maintaining connections. I'm still a little confused on how these relationships will help me when it's time to apply and interview for positions. Am I supposed to email them and ask to have my resume pushed? Or should I just hope they will filter me out and give me a first-round?

Any insight or personal experience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
