Networking in college

Hey all,

i’ve been seeing a lot of post about networking in college. What does that really entail? Like what do you have to do? Especially everyone been saying network beyond school (outside of school)

Incoming class of 2027, any tips&tricks would be appreciated!!!!

Go on your university’s LinkedIn page and search for alumni in careers you are interested in. Shoot them a message asking for a quick chat or, if you can find their email, email them.

Ask them about their career, the work, what the like about it, how they prepared for recruiting, the city they live in, hobbies, etc. Just get to know them and be yourself. Talk about the school, clubs you have in common, whatever.

Keep in touch with the alumni you speak with. Every few months shoot them a message to catch up. Congratulate them on new jobs or promotions if you see it on LinkedIn (if it happens).

When it comes time, you can tell them you are applying at XYZ and were wondering if they could refer you. Maybe they know of some internships or FT roles. Maybe they have a buddy at ABC they could connect you with (this happens more than you think).

The point is to build good rapport with people, meet mentors, make acquaintances (hopefully friends) and just get your name out there.
