Networking is Broken: 30+ Calls, Zero Value — What Am I Missing?

I’ve had over 30 networking calls in the past year trying to break into investment banking / private equity. And honestly?

I’m starting to think the whole process is broken.

  • Every chat feels the same: “I did X → went to Y → now at Z.”
  • Advice is copy-paste.
  • Zero real insight. Zero real connection. Always chattering about obscure work facts.

Worse? I have no idea how to actually stay in touch. These aren’t mentors or friends — just names in my inbox. Following up feels awkward and forced. Especially in the UK, where people don’t really “check in” unless there’s a reason.

So I need help:

  • Am I missing something big here?
  • Are others faking it or actually building meaningful relationships?
  • How do you make networking not boring — for them and for me?
  • And do I really need to stay in touch with everyone I speak to?

Appreciate any honest feedback. I’m genuinely stuck.

Some calls are shitty and will feel like that, but you need to rely on idiosyncratic opportunity. Ex: I noticed someone I was on a call with had a nice watch that I liked, I complimented him on the watch, we talked about watches for five minutes (I do not even own a watch), and I got the interview.
