If you're talking to an alum, you could try talking about your alma mater. Things like your sports team, clubs/organizations they might have been a part of, classes they took, favourite bars they went to, when the last time they visited and how things have changed, etc. Obviously this is more appropriate for casual networking, not during a Q&A panel.
Also, Lazard isn't a middle market firm by far. Make sure you know some background on all of the firms that are coming.
