Networking Question - MD forwarded email to recruiter
So I contacted a top MD at a BB who I had no relation to..The MD didn't bother responding but he did foward the email to a campus recruiter. Recruiter emailed me saying the usual - look at our site, advising me to apply, and told me a little about the recruting process. Would you say this means anything that the MD fowarded the email to the recrutier? Is this common? Sorry I know this is a pretty foolish question but I don't know how any of this works.
Also, what would you guys suggest emailing the recrutier? A simple thank you and ask if I could stay in touch? Try to push the recruiter to ask for a resume? Attach a resume?

Honestly, odds are the MD forwarded your resume to the recruiter, but this isn't a big plus. Essentially the MD either doesn't want to be bothered or doesn't have the time, but wants to at least do something, so he/she put you in touch with the recruiter. Not a big deal, since at least you've got recruiter contact info (not great, but better than nothing).
I would not attach my resume to the next email, but I would definitely shoot a thank you letter with a follow-up question or two on things not quickly found on the site (otherwise it's obvious you didn't bother to look at what's already been sent to you). From there, I would try to keep a low key dialogue going with the recruiter to ultimately slip the resume in at some point in the coming weeks closer to recruiting and if the opp presents itself - if it doesn't, or if the recruiter doesn't seem interested, then move on to another contact - don't force it.
Additionally, I would send a thank you email to the MD. While he probably doesn't have much time or a ton of interest, sending a quick thank you email for getting your name over to the recruiter can't hurt. If you don't get a response, no harm done - he may, however, have a free minute, and send you a reply - either way, it's another shot at making a contact. Again, no response, leave it at that and move on to another contact. Don't push too hard and don't send your resume without getting some dialogue going first.

Why carry on a dialogue with a recruiter? It's not a banker you're networking with, and its close to application time, so why not just be direct and send your resume?
