What type of shop you were at and why were you laid off? Please be honest if there was a performance issue or not, as that can help us tailor any advice we give.

9 months of experienced and getting laid off is tough. You could 1) exit the industry and essentially start over as something else like a consultant 2) move down-market to a continue bank and work your way to Grace

Layoffs are hard bc unless you tell me the entire group got cut, there is always an element of you being at the bottom of the bucket. God speed.

Currently in this boat. I am honest and upfront about it and most firms haven’t questioned anything. People are understanding due to the mass layoffs that have occurred in the industry.

I have also had processes just not closing but I am involved in current processes so it has not affected me. I’d be honest about what happened, and try to get your story straight.

I am also in a very similar situation, would be great to find a way to message you both to discuss strategies

How public was the layoff? Would competitors in your industry sector be well aware of it? Would your old colleagues (especially well connected seniors) vouch for you?

I was recently laid off (very public, large layoff) and was able to land a few offers. I used my seniors references / connections to get in the door for interviews at a handful of banks. Because my seniors were willing to vouch for me, I had very few questions around why I was laid off. None of the jobs I interviewed for were ever posted.

I'd reach back out to your old colleagues and see if they'd be willing to share your resume with any of their friends in the industry. Having a recommendation from someone you worked with, should eliminate most of the stigma around the layoff. Sounds like you were a good junior, so you should be able to talk to your resume / interview well.

How recent was this and how many analysts in your group were laid off?

See if you can have a few people be a reference point. There are a lot of places hiring lateral analysts. Do you have more than a year of experience in IB? If so, you should be able to lateral elsewhere at the same level
