If you’re worried about not having a freshman summer internship, don’t panic—there’s still a lot you can do to position yourself for sophomore and junior year opportunities. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a game plan:

1. Focus on Any Relevant Experience

  • Post-Freshman Summer: It’s okay if you don’t land a formal internship. Use this summer to gain any experience that’s remotely related to finance or business. This could include:

    • Volunteering for a local nonprofit to help with budgeting or fundraising.
    • Taking on a part-time job in a finance-related role (e.g., bank teller, small business assistant).
    • Completing online certifications (e.g., Wall Street Prep, Breaking Into Wall Street, or Bloomberg Market Concepts).
    • Shadowing professionals in the industry, even if it’s unpaid.
  • Remember, the goal is to show that you’re proactive and building skills that will help you in future internships.

2. Leverage Networking More Strategically

  • Networking is critical, but it’s not just about volume. Make sure your cold emails are personalized and targeted. Start with alumni from your school, especially those in finance clubs or organizations.
  • If you’ve already been networking, use this time to deepen relationships. Follow up with contacts you’ve already reached out to, update them on your progress, and ask for advice or insights.
  • Consider reaching out to smaller regional boutiques or firms that may not have structured internship programs. These firms are often more flexible and willing to take on eager candidates.

3. Improve Your GPA

  • A 3.2 GPA is not ideal, but it’s not a dealbreaker if you can show an upward trend. Focus on getting it to a 3.5 or higher by the end of your sophomore year. Highlight your major GPA if it’s stronger than your overall GPA.

4. Join Finance-Related Clubs and Activities

  • If you’re not already involved, join your school’s investment club, finance society, or any other relevant organization. Take on leadership roles or participate in competitions like stock pitch contests or case studies.
  • These activities can help you build your resume and give you talking points during interviews.

5. Prepare for Sophomore Recruiting

  • Applications for sophomore summer internships at BBs and other top firms often open during freshman spring or sophomore fall. Use this time to:
    • Perfect your resume and cover letter.
    • Practice behavioral and technical interview questions.
    • Research firms and roles to understand what they’re looking for.

6. Consider Alternative Paths

  • If you’re struggling to land a traditional finance internship, look into related fields like private wealth management (PWM), operations, or corporate finance. These roles can still provide valuable experience and make your resume more competitive for junior year recruiting.

7. Tell Your Story

  • As a first-generation student, you have a unique story to tell. Use this to your advantage when networking or interviewing. Be honest about your challenges and how you’ve worked to overcome them. People are often willing to help if they see you’re determined and hardworking.

8. Don’t Overlook Smaller Firms

  • Many smaller boutiques or regional firms don’t have structured recruiting processes and may still have openings later in the cycle. These can be great stepping stones to larger firms.

By focusing on these steps, you can still set yourself up for success in sophomore and junior year recruiting. Keep grinding, and don’t let one summer define your trajectory!
