No More Unpaid BB PWM Freshman Internships?

Hello all!
I am a freshman at a non-target liberal arts college interested in IB. I want to get a PWM internship in ML/MS/UBS this summer and have been cold-calling and cold-emailing many SVPs and MDs in these firms, and even once came in person with a resume to the ML group head. Yet, all of them say that even though previously local internships were available, now the company prohibits them, and nowadays, the only option is to apply as a Junior/Senior via the portal. Yet, I know some people successfully got internships at PWM as freshmen. Should I keep calling and emailing and eventually find one, or is it really true that local internships are obsolete? Maybe I should not call it internship in my calls or emails, but something like "externship" or "experience-gain"?

Thank you!

Hey there!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like the landscape for internships, especially in PWM, is indeed changing. It's not uncommon for firms to adjust their policies over time. However, don't let this discourage you. Persistence is key in this industry.

While it's possible that some firms have moved away from local internships, it doesn't mean all have. Keep reaching out, keep networking. You might want to consider expanding your search to include smaller firms or boutiques as well. They often have more flexibility when it comes to internships.

As for what to call your potential role, it's always best to be clear and honest about your intentions. If you're looking for an internship, call it that. If you're open to other forms of experience, like an externship or job shadowing, make that clear as well.

Remember, every 'no' is one step closer to a 'yes'. Keep swinging, and eventually, you'll hit a home run. Good luck!

Seen a lot of off cycle for underclass especially for MS but never heard of unpaid summer internships personally. I’d say the processes for internships at BB will still be pretty formal where cold calling and networking won’t lead to a position made for you but it might help if they do look to take interns.

I’d recommend focusing on networking elsewhere for freshman summer and keeping your eye out for off cycle PWM internships at spots like MS and UBS.
